Peia Patai

Peia Patai has been studying traditional navigation for decades to carry the Pwo title or master navigator. There are only 12 PWO master navigators from the north and south Pacific. Peia’s family hails from Mauke/Aitutaki in the Pacific. He was trained as a navigator by the Australian Navy, but then went to learn the skills of traditional 'celestial' navigation from Hawaiian navigator Nainoa Thompson. When not sailing, Peia Pataia goes fishing around Rarotonga, the Cook's main island. Peia Pataia is chairman of the Te Puna Marama Voyaging Foundation, which he's created with Tua Pittman, the second master navigator from the Cook Islands.
